Pesticides Kill Fish on P.E.I.

Although this article is a little older is feel that it relates very well to the reading this week.  Last July hundreds of trout were found dead in the Trout River and Big Pierre Jacques River on Prince Edward Island.  Although they could not be sure as to the cause of death, soil and water samples done suggest that they could be attributed to pesticide runoff.  About 200 dead fish were collected along a four km stretch of the Trout River but scientists estimated that thousand more died and were not found due to predators and river currents.  These events occurred in late July, which is a common time for pesticide application.  When there are then heavy rains this then leads to the pesticides being washed into the local waterways before they can be absorbed by the plants.  This is becoming an even bigger problem because people are becoming used to seeing these large amounts of dead fish and are no longer concerned when this happens so nothing is being done.  It is believe that it may take 5-6 years for trout populations to fully recover from this pesticide runoff.
