Delaware Run Greenway

This project was based on the water quality of Delaware Run. The idea is for this project is to help gather more information regarding the pollutants that are in the Run. The information gathered will be used in a formal community meeting to discuss what further actions need to be in order to help clean the river and other aspects of the whole project initiative. Currently we do not have results of the water samples as Justin and I are still working on collecting samples. We are specifically looking at the E. coli content in Delaware. By having multiple sample sites, we are also trying to pin point the primary source of where the river is being contaminated by E. coli.
Methods and Results:
John Krygier was the primary source of information and gave some structure as what was expected of both Justin and I to do throughout the semester. To start we needed to familiarize ourselves with what data has already been collected. This initial data and information can be found on a google drive folder that was shared with everyone.
As the weather started to get warmer and more tolerable for field work, we went out to take pictures. These pictures were taken while walking Delaware Run. Starting at the bridge off 37 (W Central) near Miller Country Gardens. From there pictures were taking of different infrastructures and drainage pipes, along with various pieces of garbage. Pictures were taken of Delaware Run just past Houk road. Also, I have put the images into a google map showing exactly where my pictures were taken for future reference.
Once there were photos of some drainage outlets we were able to roughly establish points where we would be able to conduct water samples. Using ArcMap, we were able to generate a map of the Run as well as 19 potential sample sites. We met with Caroline from the Public Utilities Department for Delaware county to give us instruction as to how we were to collect appropriate samples. She then gave us a list of locations she came up with for sampling. Some spots being similar to the ones I created Justin and I decided to follow her guide to the 5 sample sites she gave us. We were given 30 sample bottles to conduct the sampling and to then be brought back to the facility for testing.

Five locations for sampling were established. Starting at the Northwest going down river, Justin and I gathered our samples. We used two sampling jars for each site. This was done in order to help get more accurate data from the testing. We went out and collected samples at each site Thursday May 3, 2018 around noon. We are going to go out again on Monday and Tuesday of next week to gather the rest of the samples.
• Take 1-2 steps upstream, reach out your arm, and collect the sample upstream form where you ae standing. It is recommended that you wear rubber gloves.
• Open the bottle and remember to not touch the inside of the bottle or the cap with your hands.
• Rinse the bottle and lid three times.
• Hold the bottle near its base and plunge it with the top facing downwards into the water to 3-5 inches below the surface or at approximately wrist level. Don’t worry if you cannot get the bottle to this exact distance. Just try to avoid sampling water from the surface.
• Turn the bottle into the current (upstream) and wait for it to fill.
• Bring the bottle up, pour out some water so that there is 1 inch of air space and close and tighten the bottle with its lid or cap.
• Place the sample in a cooler with ice packs to be transported back to the testing facility.
• Be sure to record all necessary information on field data sheets.
Once we have the samples and have the results we will then be able to add that data in ArcMap, specifically into the attributes table for each of the five sample sites. Also, I will be making a map through google maps showing the exact location of where sampling was done.
Water quality testing: Locations have been set and can easily be a project for future students. There has been a lot of data that has been collected and can be found in one primary location, google drive. It can be easily accessed for future additions from projects. This can be a very environmentally beneficial project if more and more students worked on this each semester over time. Delaware Greenway has a lot more ideas and plans that students can get involved with if they don’t want to do anything with the river itself. To make this project better I think more people need to be involved to get a lot more data and start making progress on some smaller aspects of the overall project. The best way to do this is having more classes like
GEOG: 360 where students have to do semester long projects. Also, they should be exposed to the project. If no one knows about the project nothing can get done.
