San Francisco has just become the first city in America to ban the sale of plastic water bottles. It is a four year project that will eventually leave San Francisco plastic water bottle free with exceptions for areas with no alternatives. Bottles holding 22ounces or more are still acceptable to sell. This movement is in support of the, “Think Outside the Box,” campaign for restrictions on non-ecofriendly products. In the past, San Francisco has made bans on plastic bags and styrofoam. The American Beverage Association (members include Coca Cola and Pepsi) said, “nothing more than a solution in search of a problem. This is a misguided attempt by city supervisors to decrease waste in a city of avid recyclers”. Hopefully in the future, other cities and states will follow San Francisco’s lead and become more plastic free as well!
