By: Daniela Franco

This article brings up n important milestone for the city of San Juan in, Puerto Rico, and specifically for its overpopulated “slums” near the Martín Peña Channel. Where infrastructure has been built to help support the people who call this part of San Juan home, and in turn to help establish a place where they can improve the community that has arisen there, insure the right to housing, protection of the land, community participation in what goes on in the city, and public health as well as the health of the channel. Addressing the important issue relating to the idea that in order to get people to start caring about the environment their basic needs and necessities need to be met, and challenging the common misconception that having a house is a human right and not just a commodity.
