Current Event: Mediterranean Sea ‘accumulating zone of plastic debris’

Tourism is a key industry

  • Survey found over 1,000 ton of plastic floating on Mediterranean sea surface
  • It was mostly fragments of bags, bottles and wrappings
  • The debris is very detrimental to animals
  • Plastic has been found in the stomach of fish, birds, whales and turtles
  • Scientists are particularly concerned about micro-plastics
  • Micro-plastics are very small pieces of plastic that are less than 5mm in length
  • Dr. Morritt of the Biological Sciences department at the University of London stated that; since plastic does not degrade in the environment, “we must think more carefully about how we dispose, recycle and reduce our use of plastic.
  • The Mediterranean Sea makes up less than 1% of the global Ocean area, but is extremely important economically and ecologically
  • The Mediterranean contains between 4 and 18% of all marine species
  • It is also responsible for the tourism and fishing markets of the surrounding countries
