The oil spill that I wrote about last week is worse than officials originally thought. The amount of oil spilled is at least double what they had first estimated. Federal officials have now calculated that around 20,000 gallons of crude oil has seeped into the nature reserve via a 5 inch long crack in the pipeline. The pipe has since been repaired and oil started flowing through it again on Sunday. Efforts to clean up the oil are ongoing, however the cause of the crack in the pipeline is still unknown. This is not the first time this pipeline has had problems, according to the Department of Transportation there has been 39 incidents since 2006, resulting in 31,000 gallons of oil being “lost” and more than $7.5 million in damages.
