As we gaze into the mirror it holds up for us…. reading this made me think of wilderness in Disney and other stories for children i have either read or have been told. in these stories the woods, forest, unknown, or wilderness are always seen as a negative place. in snow white the queen orders the man, or whoever, to take snow white into the forest and “get rid of her”. Hansel and Grettle encounter the witch in the woods. the list goes on and on. people are raised to be fearful of the unknown wilderness. why would people be scared of it enough to produce stories that have been passed down for generations? by this i mean there is truth to what cronon in saying. wilderness is not as pretty as so many people have romanticized it to be. this does not mean i don’t enjoy nature/wilderness. because areas of wilderness aren’t pristine is why i enjoy them. i think it is fun to find old moonshine operations, boots, tires, and other random things in the woods.
