Textile Recycling

Textile Recycling Is Thriving in New York

This article relates to my project of reusing and recycling things students throw out at the end of the school year. New York City began textile recycling efforts last year and it has turned out to be a great success. About 130 apartment buildings have established  recycling bins, for people to donate their old clothes.  The program has gathered 50 tons of textiles in the first 6 months of its creation and this amount is expected to rise as apartment building are actively looking to get these recycling bins on their property.

The clothes that can be reused are given to local charity groups and things that are not can be recycled into wiping clothes, carpet padding, and other products. This program emphasizes the importance of convenience.  If it is just as easy for people to throw their old clothes into bins around their apartment instead of in their garbage, then a lot more is going to be donated and kept out of land fills.
