How to be Idle

This book wasn’t to bad. It was a very good leisure reading book for break in my opinion. It was the first book we have read that I was not totally bored with. He brought up quite a few good point that I had not really thought about along the lines of being lazy. He pretty much confirmed my thoughts that being lazy really isn’t that bad at all!

first point that I thought was interesting was his discussion on controlling the masses by use of religion. The idea that God was tossed into our lives by the hands of capitalists to make us think that the higher up didn’t like it when we were lazy. And that the second runner up for this type of control is hunger. The is a technique that is used with many animal trainers. Use food as in intensive to do good work. Not a bad idea when your training a dog to do a trick, but when it come down to humans and a life or death situation I think thats pushing it. It seems to me that our government finds it way to easy to get what they want by pushing a harder lifestyle on its people.

We all hate hangovers. But why? Is it the headache of possible vomiting that comes late in the afternoon when you wake up after a long and eventful night? Im not sure, but Hodgkinson brings up another very interesting point. The only reason we hate the hangover is because we are trying to live like we dont have one. When you wake up you don’t plan to be sitting around the house watching crappy cartoons on TV and eating junk food. You want to go out and get work done. We have been breed to think that we have to use all of our time to do work and get stuff done. This moral is one that we can carry into just about every aspect of our lives. Prepare for the hangover. You know its coming. So be ready to lounge around the house and relax. Its what your body needs.

I love to take walk. Its one of the most relaxing things to do on a nice warm spring day. But these days no one take the time to take a walk and see what there is to be seen. Everyone is to busy and has way to much stuff to do to take time to sit and reflect on whats around them. The last thing I took from this author is to ” seize the moment”. The author told a story of how he was taking a walk with his friend. They were surrounded by beautiful scenery all around them when is friend just stopped and said “I’m just going to meditate for a bit.” WOW! Who does that?! No one thats who. And I think its sad. I envy that man. The man who has the ability to see an opportunity to stop and absorb what is around him. It is amazing to think what kind of knowledge and passions we can develop from doing things like this.

How to be Idol. Its a pretty smart book. It will teach you a lot about what we think as being lazy and what taking time to stop and relax can really do for your life.
