It is incredibly fortunate that this class takes place in Ohio and not Israel. As this story in the New York Times reports, a city in Israel has instituted a campaign to rid the streets of dog droppings by fining dog owners. Now, its not like an ordinance like this anything new; the problem has always been enforcement. Let’s see: use our police force to stop violent criminals or patrol the streets watching for repeats of the incident from last week’s class?
However, there’s a catch! The Israeli city in question, Petah Tikva, is requiring all dog owners to provide DNA samples of their canines when they register the dog. Then, any “gifts” left on the sidewalk can be matched to the offending animal and the owner fined. Furthermore, the city will routinely select random samples from marked dog-waste disposal barrels and send rewards to the owners for following municipal law.
On a random note, can we please talk about why no one thought the alcoholic 200 lb. chimpanzee living with a 70 year old woman who gave it Xanax to calm it down was a bad idea before it ripped someone’s face off?
