On Sunday, the world’s first commercial airline flight was powered by renewable energy. The airplane, a Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet, flew from London to Amsterdam with one of its fuel tanks filled with a bio-jet blend including babassu oil and coconut oil. They chose the combination of babassu and coconut oils not because they believe that these two oils will be a common biofuel in the future, but because they did not want to use something like corn oil that is also a staple food source. The fuel blend used on the flight was 80% regular jet fuel and 20% neat biofuel. Studies have shown that up to 40% biofuel can be used. more.
