The National Science Foundation funded a study of the water chemistry of the Mississippi River over the last 100 years. The researchers found that agricultural practices on the land surrounding the river has had a major impact on the increased carbon dioxide and bicarbonate levels in the water. The high levels of carbon dioxide in the Mississippi River has further reaching impacts in the Gulf of Mexico where the water becomes more acidic as a result of the additional CO2.
